I.                   Summary

The Shipping Agent is responsible for carrying out all operational and administrative requirements for the arrival, turn around and departure of vessels. Duties include coordinating berthing assignments, coordinating and ordering vessel husbandry services, maintaining all documentation and reporting notices, and handling all port expenses. This career requires five years of shipping agency experience, strong attention to detail, and proven customer service skills. The ability to obtain a TWIC and ASBA certification is also required.

II.                Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all vessel boarding in port as well as at mid-stream anchorages.

 

  • Coordinates berthing assignments and orders pilots, tugs and linesmen for vessel movements.

 

  • Provides responses to incoming requests regarding assigned ships, as well as estimates and general inquires.

 

  • Coordinates and orders vessel husbandry services.

 

  • Responsible for port expenses.

 

  • Creates, executes, and dispatches commercial and legal documentation accurately within a timely matter.

 

  • Provides cargo interests with updates for vessel prospects.

 

  • Assists in training and onboarding of new team members as required.

 

  • May travel to other ports to provide operational support as required.

 

  • Coordinates with U.S. government authorities and agencies to prepare and submit required documents.

 

  • Liaise with U.S. Customs, Border Protection, and the U.S. Coast Guard.

 

  • Verify successful filings or reporting notices for vessel arrivals and departures, cargo import and entry, and export manifests.

 

  • Other job duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of maritime policy and procedures required.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to work in team environment as well as independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Proven customer service skills.
  • Creative problem solving skills, and the ability to resolve issues and provide solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Strong attention to detail.

IV.             Education & Experience

  • At least one year of experience of shipping agency experienced required.
  • ASBA agency certified or willing to become certified within the first twelve months of employment.
  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC).
